Turning Over All the Stones
When I thought about how I could take patients through their journey to vibrant health, I wanted something that would leave “no stone unturned”—that is, I wanted to address ALL the possible reasons that someone is hurting, then because nothing was ignored or passed over, that person would get the relief that they were seeking. Emotions are HUGE stones that often go ignored, and to me it is absolutely foolish to say that these have absolutely no role in helping someone to get better from an injury or pain.
Hey, I’d love to be wrong when the shoulder is “just a strain in the shoulder” and the knee is just a tracking issue of the kneecap, but I know that the frustration you have about that shoulder not healing or the worries of the knee hurting again DO have an impact on your healing. Just by you knowing that, at least honoring some part of this, will help you to fully heal in the way that I believe you truly desire to heal. That is my vision for you.
Don’t poo-poo this emotional stuff. It will get you, no matter how hard you deny or suppress it, or think it’s going away. Sensations including pain are ways that our bodies are trying to communicate with us, and for optimum health we need to tune into the conversation. Is it tough to confront our emotions? Hell yeah, especially when you are used to expressing and talking about emotions, such as my experience from growing up in the Midwest. However, the gains you can make from it are astounding, because stress, worry, fear, frustration, anger, grief, etc. are taking up so much of your energy before you even move a muscle every day, so managing it through the techniques I have outlined will have a profound effect on your life.
Think about your subconscious mind like a computer hard drive. We download things onto the hard drive, much of it (like 99.9% or more, but most figures I’ve heard reference this) without our even knowing it. We acquire programs from the people we hang around like our families or our environment (media, tv, school). Many times we get harmful or self-limiting programs that are like viruses.
After a while, the viruses will take up enough of your hard drive to the point that your usual applications on the screen start to run really slow or not at all. You ever have that happen to you? The computer just freezes, rendering it useless until the viruses can be removed.
So what can be done about the emotions to help me heal or dramatically decrease my pain?
Well, this is a big tool that I stick in my back pocket until I hit a wall with my physical movement stuff, and it’s called EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique. Most people know it as Tapping.
Simply put, Tapping uses very powerful acupressure points on the body to dissipate energy that an emotion may be having on the energy of the physical body’s system. You literally tap on the points while you say a series of statements related to your frustration, fear, anger, jealousy, guilt, etc., then keep going until it isn’t there anymore. Did you read that closely? It has been shown in research that people who use EFT have actually eliminated phobias or long held emotional trauma after only a few short sessions (or less) of EFT. It doesn’t happen all the time this quickly, but EFT is an amazing tool when used correctly and persistently. This is very important, because even though EFT can help a lot, the difference between just tapping points and saying things right can be huge. Not that you won’t get results with the basic information, but they can be much better with the tried and true methods. Again, it’s a case of good, better and best.
A ton of information can be found about this on the web, including www.eftuniverse.com, www.thetappingsolution.com, and www.emofree.com. Each of these sites has videos and tutorials to get you acquainted to tapping, as well as testimonials and (yes) RESEARCH on the effectiveness of EFT/Tapping on many physical and emotional problems people have, including PTSD. In fact, there is a program where Iraq war veterans are getting much needed help, and the results seem to stay with long term follow up. It is one of the best things that I have found that helps with stress. Since we know through research in books such as The Body Bears the Burden by Dr. Robert Scaer or The Stress of Life by Dr. Hans Selye (and many many more books) how profound stress can take a physical toll on the body, it is a NO Brainer to go after stress with the Tapping technique—you will not get hurt unless you poke yourself in the eye or something, plus the benefit of not feeling so stressed is totally worth tapping yourself in the face a bunch of time even it looks weird as hell.
Please go to the websites I listed above and get started as soon as you can, preferably NOW. You really will not realize the great gift I’ve shown you until you ACT on the information in front of you. This is crazy good stuff, and if you had any idea how real change you can make very quickly, then you wouldn’t be still reading this because you are already at one of the websites.
To make this simpler for you, I have included some things that I believe my patients will get the most out of Tapping.
Tapping for Physical Pain
Tapping for your Diagnosis, or your thoughts/beliefs about your diagnosis.
Tapping for the Emotion Related to your pain (missing _______, regretting_________, angry at __________)
“The Tapping Tree”—Tapping for metaphors
Personal Peace Procedure:
Some people really don’t know how to get started, so the best thing is to hop on any of the “Tap Alongs” on www.eftuniverse.com or their YouTube channel, just so you get an idea. The movie “The Tapping Solution” is a great resource on what EFT is and how this technique has made profound effects in people’s lives. With over 10 million people around the world practicing EFT, there must be something to this! Just like acupressure and acupuncture have been around for 1000s of years, EFT applies some concepts from these and combines it with a quantum physics model of how all energy is energy, including thought and emotion.
